A Legacy Rooted in Montecito
The story begins long before the plaza's name existed — at a bend in Coast Village Road that has always been a natural gathering point in Montecito. In the mid-20th century, this corner was already a working commercial address, a simple roadside building serving the growing community between the highway and the beach.
In the early 1970s, Elizabeth Hay Bechtel and her Berryhill Properties partnership brought in Santa Barbara architecture firm Ketzel, Achey & Goodman to transform a modest storefront into a proper mixed-use plaza — adding a two-story office wing and formalizing on-site parking.

By the late 1970s, the four-parcel, multi-building configuration was in place. Stewardship passed to Jon H. Bechtel as trustee through the 1980s and 1990s. By the late 1990s, the cluster was formally known as Olive Mill Plaza — a name recognizing both its physical position at the Olive Mill gateway and its role as a small commercial hub. In 2003, 1225 Coast Village Road was acquired by the Orfalea Family Foundation.
The name itself traces to 'El Molino' — a 19th-century olive-crushing mill at 200 Olive Mill Road that produced olive oil, soap, and medicinal olive-oil candy before closing in 1905. Olive Mill Plaza inherits its name and spirit from these mills that once defined this crossroads.

By the late 1990s, the cluster was formally named Olive Mill Plaza—a title recognizing its gateway position and role as a commercial hub. Stewardship passed to the current ownership group, with three parcels acquired in 1999 and the fourth in 2003, ensuring the plaza’s continued preservation and village character.
